What is your office doing to address property taxes?

Our office is working diligently to address immediate needs and concerns of residents by supporting owners navigate the property tax system so that they are not overpaying. We help residents save money by advocating, informing, and apply for exemptions and apples with residents. We know that is not enough, we need to change the property tax system so that working class people can own homes and that property taxes are not the barrier in owning property. We working with all City, County, and State stakeholders to make sure big corporations and the ultra rich pay their fair share in property taxes. We are exploring a property tax increase percent cap, new exemptions, and simplifying appeals. To achieve this change we need to find alternative revenue streams to ensure that our communities still have the resources they need. sustainable , predictable, and fair property taxes

Your property taxes go to many aspects of government usage, such as education, city of Chicago services, Forest Preserve, and Chicago parks. They get used to ensure our neighborhoods have all the critical infrastructure and services needed for the community.

Why are property taxes unfair?

Property taxes are tied to the market of properties which leaves property owners at the mercy of market fluctuations, it is an undemocratic system that can be greatly influenced and shaped by a small minority of affluent corporations and land speculators who are focused on making a profit not on making decisions that center community needs and housing as a human right. Property taxes are a regressive taxes and the government relies heavily on property taxes because corporations and the ultra rich do not pay their fair share which further burdens everyday homeowners in paying more in property taxes to fund our services.

Who can fix the property tax system?

Property taxes are currently a central component to how our government is funded. To fix the property tax system we need elected officials from all levels of government to collaborate and restructure this system that only works for the ultra rich and big corporations. It will take State, County, and City officials to make the appropriate changes at all the leaves but to do that we also need community support, input, and advocacy to make the bold changes that our communities desperately need.
